Sugar House Veterinary Hospital

Preventive care is one of the most important investments you can make in your pet’s long-term health. Vaccinations play a critical role in protecting dogs and cats from serious, contagious, and potentially life-threatening diseases.

At Sugar House Veterinary, we tailor vaccination protocols to each pet’s age, lifestyle, medical history, and risk factors — because no two pets are exactly alike.

Most routine wellness appointments for healthy pets receiving vaccinations are seen at our Wellness Center location, where we focus exclusively on preventive care. However, if your primary doctor is scheduled at the Hospital location, we are happy to accommodate vaccination appointments here as well to ensure continuity of care.

Why Vaccinations Matter

Vaccines work by safely stimulating your pet’s immune system to recognize and fight specific viruses or bacteria. This protection not only safeguards your pet but also helps reduce the spread of contagious disease within our community.

Staying current on vaccinations is essential for:

  • Preventing serious illness
  • Protecting public health
  • Meeting legal requirements (such as rabies vaccination)
  • Boarding, grooming, and training facility requirement

Personalized Vaccine Plans

Our veterinarians evaluate each pet individually before recommending vaccines. We consider:

  • Age and life stage
  • Indoor vs. outdoor lifestyle
  • Travel and boarding exposure
  • Underlying health conditions
  • Previous vaccine history

This ensures your pet receives appropriate protection without unnecessary over vaccination.

Canine Core Vaccines

  • Rabies: Required by law and essential for preventing this fatal virus.
  • DA2PPV (Distemper, Adenovirus-2, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus): a combo vaccine.
  • Leptospirosis: Recognized as a core vaccine due to risk in the area.

Canine Non-Core Vaccines

  • Bordetella bronchiseptica (Kennel Cough): Crucial for dogs that visit boarding facilities, dog parks, or groomers.
  • Influenza (H3N2 & H3N8): Protects against the dog flu, a contagious respiratory infection.
  • Lyme Disease: Recommended for dogs with high exposure to tick-prone areas.
  • Rattlesnake Vaccine: Offered as a risk-reduction measure in certain areas.

Feline Core Vaccines

  • Rabies: Required by law and essential for preventing this fatal virus.
  • FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia) a combo vaccine.

Feline Non-Core Vaccines

  • FeLV Feline Leukemia Virus: Strongly recommended for outdoor or high-risk cats, it is a common virus in the area.

When to Schedule

Puppies and kittens receive a series of three vaccine sets, administered 3–4 weeks apart, beginning at approximately 8 weeks of age. This schedule helps build strong, lasting immunity during their most vulnerable stage of life. Adult pets then receive booster vaccinations annually or every three years, depending on the specific vaccine and individual risk factors.

If you’re unsure whether your pet is up to date, we’re happy to review their records and help you create a plan. Contact Sugar House Veterinary to schedule a vaccination appointment at our Wellness Center or Hospital location — and let’s keep your pet protected year-round.
